PLANET HOME

COMMITMENT

Independent, attentive, enthusiastic and professional, we want to make our world a bit better every day with everything we do. We are driven by an urge for continuous improvement, but also by the knowledge that one of the greatest challenges of our time is the responsible use of the resources available to us on this planet. Decisive and swift action is indispensable for the protection of nature. We are convinced that a multitude of small steps can help to preserve the environment we all share.

Naturally different

That is why we see sustainability as a core value in our daily work. For us, sustainability is not just a matter of certification or a marketing buzzword. Rather, we see it as a search for sensible alternatives, questioning the way we treat the environment, how we do business, but equally how we choose to interact with our guests, friends and fellow human beings.

Our perception of sustainability, energy efficiency and the use of natural resources is reflected as an elementary building block, not only in the modern modular timber design of the hotel but also in the conscious and responsible selection of all the products which we use. Equally fundamental to achieving our goal is our team of great employees – because they are the heart & soul of the hotel and bring it to life. With cheerfulness, friendliness and charm, we all work together and aim for the highest standards of quality and service.

Regrowth

The 2ND HOME HOTEL is more than two-thirds made of wood.

As part of a three-pronged REGROWTH campaign, we have been donating 50 cents per night to PLANT FOR THE PLANET for tree planting since 2019, when waiving daily room cleaning for stays of several days. Likewise, we reward this waiver of our guests with a free drink, so we succeed together with our guests another step towards sustainability.

Further components of our REGROWTH project are:

Since 2021, we support our local reforestation project with one additional newly planted tree for each direct booking.
In addition, we will plant 1,000 more new trees this year – as a measure to recycle the raw materials used to build the hotel.

The amount of wood used for the 2ND HOME HOTEL will thus be regrown in a few years.

Responsibility

We accept our responsibility to operate in an environmentally friendly and energy-saving way, to avoid waste, to dispose of it properly and to feed it into the appropriate recycling systems, monitoring this process continuously.

We promote and practise fair treatment of our staff, and create flexible and socially just working conditions and working hours. We take a clear stand against racism and homophobia.

Through our tree donations, we are minimising our CO2 footprint and supporting a local project for environmental protection.

LED lighting is used throughout the hotel. All electrical appliances and cooling systems meet the highest energy efficiency standards, in order to minimise energy consumption. Heaters in the hotel bedrooms are controlled digitally and efficiently based on occupancy. All rooms are equipped with digital guest information folders, and tablet computers have replaced printed food and beverage menus.

Through efficient use of digital media, we are continuously reducing the amount of paper we use.

URBAN GARDEN & SUPPLY CHAIN

Our vegetable garden is right next to the hotel. You can walk over and see what is growing there and what will eventually find its way into the restaurant. Organic produce, grown from seed and seedlings, ready to pick. Tended with loving care by our gardener and kitchen team.

Seasonal, regional, both above and below ground. Vegetables, salad and herbs. That’s what we grow here from spring to late autumn. And in winter? Then we get seasonal produce and stored food from the local organic farmers.

When selecting our suppliers and service providers as well as purchasing raw materials and products, we give preference to local, organic and fair-trade suppliers who demonstrate a high level of compliance with our sustainability values. We focus on long-term and trusted partnerships. This applies to all areas of the hotel, thus we would like to show you a selection of our organic partners and organic product lines (which is frequently updated).

Recharge

The majority of the electricity used by the 2ND HOME HOTEL is produced by our combined in-house heat and power unit. Where this is not possible, we only use electricity from renewable sources.
An additional in-house photovoltaic system for excess electricity demand is being planned and will be installed shortly.

Guests with electric vehicles can recharge them during their stay at the 2nd Home Hotel free of charge. Our hotel is part of the TESLA Destination Charging programme.

On the hotel carpark, there are two modern charging stations (400V 32Ah) for electric vehicles. They are equipped with Type 2 connectors; one of the electric charging stations is TESLA-exclusive, other electric vehicles can be charged at the second one.

The free charging facility is provided for use by our hotel and restaurant guests and will be activated on demand.

Construction & Materials

Each guest room at the 2ND HOME HOTEL consists of a statically self-supporting wooden module. The rooms were made in series at the Kaufmann carpentry factory in Vorarlberg, Austria.

The very high level of prefabrication made it possible to shorten the construction time and ensure a minimally invasive impact on the environment. The modular timber construction technique contributes to an outstandingly efficient, low-emission energy balance.

All our rooms are made of local timber (spruce & oak) and the interior furnishings are mostly of high-quality natural materials.

Our commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency and the use of natural resources is reflected not only in our modern modular timber construction, but also in the conscious and responsible selection of all products we use.  Equally essential is our team of great employees because they are the heart of the hotel and make it come alive. With joy, friendliness and charm we fulfill our tasks together and orient ourselves to high standards of quality and service.
